<p>My name is Eduardo “Eddy” Marin. I was at the brink of death, but woke up a week and a half later, with injuries such as vision loss in my right eye and hearing loss in my left ear, broken wrist and an aneurism in my face. <strong>The biggest challenge mentally was having to deal with not being able to play keeper for 6 months.</strong> <strong>The biggest challenge I faced physically was not having my right eye vision or left side hearing.&nbsp;</strong></p><h3>The Road to Recovery</h3><p>The first couple steps I took into my recovery was adapting to my new depth perception, doing a lot of hand eye stuff, ball eye stuff, pretty much getting used to having one eye. A second chance: from setback to comeback

<p><strong>I am Maleni Morales, a Mexican American goalkeeper currently playing in Liga MX Femenil with Club Pachuca</strong>. Born and raised in Northern California, I grew up playing for local clubs such as UC Premier and Santa Clara Sporting. I stayed in California for college, competing in the CCAA at the NCAA Division 2 level for Sonoma State University and Cal State University Monterey Bay, with a season at Las Positas College in between transferring.</p><p> After graduating from CSUMB, I spent a season with the semi-pro team Oakland Soul in the USWL. Although I was born in the United States I had the opportunity to apply for dual citizenship through my dad who was originally born in Mexico. <strong>Applying for dual citizenship was a process my family and I began after I trialed with a team in LigaMX femenil before graduating college</strong>. This opportunity came unexpectedly and didn’t necessarily result in my immediate integration to the league but was a part of my process to eventually playing pro<strong>. Mexican futbol and rooting for teams in LigaMX was a big part of my childhood and clearly defined what having passion for the game was to me. Playing here in many ways ties into parts of my origin. &nbsp;The Mexican goalkeeper’s style of play is based on concepts similar although evolved to the ones I grew up learning from my first goalkeeper coach who had also had a Mexican background. There I played in Seconde Ligue with TEGG. I can say that I feel like my time there was very influential to my development as a person and as a player. Playing overseas and so far away from home exposed me to a lot of changes that pushed me to adapt in a short time. <strong>Moving to France I had to work to learn a new style of play, how to communicate on the pitch in a new language, adjust to a new training environment and team, as well as an entirely new country</strong>. Although at times experiencing all this change at once felt challenging, being in this situation, under stress increased my adaptability in new environments. </p><p>Moving to a new club will always come with an adjustment period but managing during this time is a skill and the more you experience the initial discomfort the more traction you can begin to build to use to your advantage when in a new situation. The Journey of Dual Nationality in Soccer & Playing Abroad

<p><strong>My name is Carlos Eduardo Herrera Lepe and I am a professional goalkeeper for Detroit City FC.</strong> I was born in Mexico City and moved to San Leandro, California at the age of 3, where I spent my life until moving away for college. I just knew that the natural progression for me was to go to college to continue my academic and athletic career and didn’t care where that took me. I<strong> spoke with JUCOs, D2s, and NAIA schools and ultimately decided on Iowa Western Community College with no idea what to expect, just the goal of achieving my dreams.</strong></p><p>Balancing soccer and school for me was challenging for me because all of this mixes in with my social life as well. Being away from home with no restrictions for the first time at 17 can be overwhelming because you’re fully responsible for all your choices. You choose if you go to class, if you are eating healthy or not, if you are doing extra gym work amongst many other things. <strong>Talent can help players stand out in college, but those who stand out the most are those who are professional enough to take care of their bodies</strong>. I began attending combines and trainings to keep myself on the radar, as well as to keep improving my game.</p><p><strong>Summer leagues were pivotal to the development of my game.</strong> I played for the Little Rock Rangers and Laredo Heat during my college summers. The best summer teams consist of Division 1 players along with some former professionals, so it's the perfect place to compare yourself to the competition and keep improving.</p><p>During my time in college and in the NPSL, I met many people who helped me get to where I am today. From staff that helped me get to trails or find new opportunities, coaches that helped me get extra reps before or after training, and players that I have the pleasure of still playing against today or have meaningful conversations with.&nbsp;</p><figure id="figure-jrdws7ro45m7ifjont"><iframe id="jrdws7ro45m7ifjont" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/UB_1MZEZvSY" class="w-full bg-gray-100 rounded-lg md:rounded-xl lg:rounded-2xl" style="aspect-ratio: 16/9;" allowfullscreen="" data-url="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UB_1MZEZvSY" data-corners="default" data-fullwidth="false" data-mce-src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/UB_1MZEZvSY" data-mce-style="aspect-ratio: 16/9;"></iframe></figure><h3>The Transition: Trials, Contracts &amp; the Pro Lifestyle&nbsp;<br></h3><p>My first professional trial that wasn’t a combine was with Monterey Bay in 2022 for their preseason. I was confident in my abilities going into the preseason, but nervous because I didn't know what to expect. <strong>The difference in level between college/semi-pro to professional is night and day</strong>. Everything you can think of gets taken to a higher level. The shooting is harder, the passes are faster, the players are stronger, and the most notable change is the level of consistency in the simple actions.</p><p>After being on trial for close to 4 weeks, I was let go and was back to square one of having no team. I went on trial with a NISA team for a couple of weeks afterward, but that ultimately didn't work out either. An issue that made securing my first contract more challenging was the fact that I had a Mexican passport. This meant that I was considered an internationa l player, and teams only had limited international roster spots that are usually reserved for players with impressive careers.&nbsp;</p><p>A few weeks into the 2022 USL season, one of the goalkeepers from Monterey Bay unfortunately suffered a season-ending injury. Following this injury, I received a phone call to go train the following day. <strong>After the training, I signed a 25-day contract and subsequently one for the remainder of the year.</strong></p><figure id="figure-zv9dxbeiv8m7ii891l"><img id="zv9dxbeiv8m7ii891l" src="https://cdn.durable.co/blocks/75GtUNvhrfpKJLeKBaXrYgO6RPHiOdcO8lhbKdORpkhbCJsbTzhtRDgLl0X3ChXe.png" alt="" title="" class="object-cover bg-gray-100 rounded-lg md:rounded-xl lg:rounded-2xl" style="aspect-ratio: 16/9; object-position: center center;" data-corners="default" data-aspect="16:9" data-caption="" data-positionx="undefined" data-positiony="undefined" data-fullwidth="false" data-mce-src="https://cdn.durable.co/blocks/75GtUNvhrfpKJLeKBaXrYgO6RPHiOdcO8lhbKdORpkhbCJsbTzhtRDgLl0X3ChXe.png" data-mce-style="aspect-ratio: 16/9; object-position: center center;"></figure><h3>The Mental &amp; Physical Demands of a Pro Goalkeeper</h3><p>Adapting to the faster pace and higher competition comes from giving it your all in every training. <strong>One of the things I've found best is that there’s someone who wants to do something extra after training</strong>. Getting as much work in while keeping your body healthy is the best way to adapt to the speed of play.</p><p>The mental side is one that isn’t spoken about too often, but one I believe to be the most important. In my first year at Monterey, I suffered from impostor syndrome. Having spells of no game time is something all goalies go through at some point, but in an environment where not playing could mean not having a contract the following year make these spells that much more taxing mentally.<strong> I am grateful to have found a sports psychologist who worked with me during the rough patches and made it all seem manageable.</strong> While there is still a bit of a stigma around seeing a psychologist, I believe training the mind is just as important as training our hands or feet.&nbsp;</p><p>Maintaining the body healthy through an entire professional season came with a learning curve for me. My body was only ever used to 3-5 month seasons, not 10 months where every training session is twice as intense as before. A<strong>fter my first season ended, I spent the offseason dropping 10-15 pounds while strengthening areas that I had issues with in the season.</strong> While the offseason work is important, I believe the most important work happens during the season. <strong>In season, one must continue to lift, although with less weight, to keep the body strong. I know this because many times I thought quitting would be easier. These tough times are just challenges to test how much you really want to achieve your goal. The Path from College Goalkeeper to Pro: Insights from Carlos Herrera

<p><strong>Emmie Allen is a professional soccer player and goalkeeper who currently plays for Bay FC in the National Women's Soccer League (NWSL).</strong> From High Point, North Carolina, she had a standout college career at the University of North Carolina (UNC), where she played as the starting goalkeeper. She was instrumental in leading her team to the national championship match in 2022, recording numerous saves and shutouts. After declaring for the 2024 NWSL Draft but not being selected, Allen joined Bay FC for preseason training and signed a one-year contract in March 2024. She made her professional debut in July 2024. I entered preseason with a "nothing to lose" mentality, and it pushed me to have some of the best performances and practices of my life. <strong>Stepping into the professional environment, I quickly learned the importance of being fully locked in—both mentally and physically—throughout every practice.</strong> It became clear that I had to believe in myself and trust that I was good enough to be there because, at the end of the day, no one else is going to have that belief for you. When I was told at the end of the two-month preseason tryout that I was being offered a contract, it was one of the most incredible feelings I’ve ever had. <strong>All the sacrifices, hard work, and determination had paid off, and my dream had finally come true.</strong> That moment will always be unforgettable, and I don’t think anything will ever top the sheer joy of realizing that my dream was now my reality."</p><h3>&nbsp;Challenges &amp; Overcoming Them<br></h3><p>"Mental toughness is essential to being a professional soccer player, and even more so for a goalkeeper. It can be tough when only one goalkeeper gets to play at a time, and there are times when you feel left out or like you’re not wanted. But it’s in those moments that you have to believe in yourself and remind yourself that you’re good enough, even if you’re not the starter. <strong>I work with a sports psychologist every week to help me overcome mistakes and mental roadblocks that arise during practice or games. When I’m not the one playing in games, I treat practice as if it’s a real match, putting pressure on myself to perform at the highest level.</strong> As a professional, I’ve learned that perfection isn’t the goal, but striving for it is. Even the best soccer players in the world make mistakes every day. What truly matters is how you respond to those mistakes. It’s how you bounce back that ultimately determines whether you’ll grow and improve from them or let them hold you back. <p>"My name is Aubrey McLin, and<strong> I’m a 2008 goalkeeper dedicated to constantly challenging myself through diverse training situations and environments. </strong>I strive to avoid becoming static or staying in a comfort zone for too long. I compete in ECNL, USL-A, WPSL, ODP, PDP, Futsal, and with a men’s team.</p><p>Through these different environments, I have come to understand that the goalkeeper position is perhaps the most mentally intense role in sports. The mindset required demands great strength and resilience—both key elements for success in this craft.</p><p>The highs and lows goalkeepers experience can happen within seconds or minutes, with stretches of inactivity suddenly interrupted by moments of intense pressure that can decide a match. After a nail-biting game which proceeded to penalty kicks, my team lost, and I had begun to struggle with a few of the comments about my performance. They were questioning my nickname, "The Wall," proposing that should be changed, and some were criticizing the decision to allow an underclassman to participate in such a high-pressure situation.</p><p>After giving myself some time to reflect, <strong>I channeled my energy into self-improvement. I focused on penalty kicks, timing, and most importantly, my mentality, I responded to matches and pressure. I sought out challenging training environments, working with semi-pro and professional athletes, men’s teams, and a mental skills coach.</strong> A year later, I found myself in the exact same situation, a playoff match decided by penalty kicks. This time, win or lose, I knew I was in a much better place mentally. We ended up winning. The first shot was a goal, I dove right while my opponent went left. I saved the second shot, while the third and fourth resulted in goals. Also, since I am the captain, I think I should help my team members understand that we shouldn’t judge our performance during play but instead focus on the mindset in which we play and on which we are working to improve. I try to do it by <strong>keeping clear communication during training and matches, with an upbeat approach, and encouragement among the team.</strong> I also work on improving my soccer IQ by watching footage of opposing teams, which allows me to provide knowledge that gives us an edge."</p><h2>Confidence Under Pressure</h2><p><strong>“An athlete’s development and success is not linear; it typically involves ups and downs, plateaus, and periods of rapid improvement.” </strong>by Soccer Parenting.<strong> </strong>I wholeheartedly agree with this statement, as, sometimes, my confidence feels impenetrable, like a brick wall. I thrive on pressure . . . I welcome it, similar to the way Billie Jean King put it, which is, “Pressure is a privilege.” However, there also come those relatively rare moments when self-doubt creeps in, and in this context, I mainly fix my gaze on the hard and tiring work that must be done to rebuild my confidence.&nbsp;</p><p>During major games, <strong>I remain confident and composed through strategies of calming my mind, practicing box breathing, and steering my attention toward thoughts I can control</strong>. For instance, in penalty kicks, I follow a set routine that I control, a series of movements I put together to keep my mind present, so as not to race through my brain with thoughts of outcomes and self-doubt.&nbsp;</p><p>Training with Coach Matias has been crucial in building my confidence. The way Matias works favors not only the athlete but also the individual.
