Youth goalkeepers face one of the most mentally demanding positions on the field. Unlike field players who can recover from a mistake more easily, goalkeepers often carry the weight of a single moment deciding a game. This is where goalkeeper imagery, the mental practice of visualizing game scenarios becomes such a game-changer and powerful tool. It helps youth goalies build confidence, perform under pressure, stay in the sport long-term, and avoid burnout.<blockquote><h3>To any players, coaches, clubs, and trainers reading this, encourage mental imagery in goalkeeping development. It might just be the secret weapon that helps a youth goalkeeper make their next big save.</h3></blockquote><h3>What is Goalkeeper Imagery? What Imagery do I Use?</h3>Goalkeeper imagery, or what I call my mental rehearsal, involves visualizing different training and game situations and how to respond to them. This technique is widely used by professional athletes but something I’m trying to advocate for in youth goalkeeping. What it does and what statistics show is it, strengthens muscle memory, reaction speed, and mental resilience.&nbsp;Personally, I use a nerdy and perhaps unique visualization approach. I visualize myself as both a shark and a goldfish, what I call a Gark. The shark represents aggression, sharp reflexes, and fluid movement, always ready to attack the ball. The goldfish, inspired by Ted Lasso, symbolizes a short memory, quickly able to reset after mistakes and letting go of self-doubt. When I practice imagery, I see myself executing saves, handling crosses, distributing the ball, leading my team, and communicating effectively. I imagine the decision-making process in high-pressure moments, preparing myself to stay composed and react instinctively.Only two years ago, after more than ten years of playing the game, was I taught about visualization. Since then, visualization has provided me with an advantage in 1v1 situations, corners, and high-pressure moments. When goalkeepers rehearse and visualize things like one-on-ones, penalty kicks, and corner kicks they improve their chance of cognitive responses to react quickly when under pressure. It is a great way to work on building confidence. Many youth goalkeepers struggle with self-doubt, especially after conceding goals. Imagery helps reinforce positive outcomes, boosting self-assurance and a strong mindset.</li><li>Visualization and imagery help build muscle memory as it triggers the same neural circuits as physical practice. By repeatedly visualizing the correct techniques: diving, ball handling, positioning, goalkeepers practice skills and drills off the pitch, reinforcing these skills without needing to be on the pitch.</li><li>Visualization and imagery help youth GKs better navigate and manage game pressure in their ability to keep their cool in stressful situations which is very important. Rehearsing staying calm and focused, preparing to handle game-day nerves effectively.</li></ol><h3>How to Incorporate Goalkeeper Imagery into Training</h3>For me, I set aside 5-10 minutes before a match in a quiet space and visualize different game scenarios. I do this as well before tryouts and training. For club GK trainings like working with Matias in Pscio goalkeeping, we break down each step to a skill both mentally and physically in a way where he verbally helps me visualize how to not only prepare, do, and handle difficult situations. Then on my own, I know how to better visualize various situations.&nbsp;Engage All Senses: not just the visual aspect but also the feel of diving for the upper 90s vs low dives, the sound of the crowd, and even the smell of the grass to make the imagery more immersive. The biggest challenge for me when I was younger was blocking out critics, boos, and gasps when a goal was conceded. Regular visualization helped turn this into white noise, improving my focus. When youth GKs reach out to me for advice or tips it’s frequently around this topic of critics and the pressure from the sidelines.&nbsp;Focus on Growth, Not Just Success: Instead of only imagining saves, I also visualize mistakes as learning opportunities. Developing a growth mindset is key, improving little by little each day. The Power of Goalkeeper Imagery

My name is Delilah Burns. I am a 2027 graduate and goalkeeper for Tampa Bay United SC’s 2009 Girls team in the ECNL league. For as long as I can remember, soccer has been my outlet. Growing up in a military family, I’ve moved more times than I can count, constantly adapting to new schools, new teams, and new environments. But through all that change, soccer has been my one constant—my safe space where nothing else matters. It doesn’t matter who I’m playing with, what level I’m playing at, or where I am—the game is always the same. The only two things I can control are my confidence and intensity, and that’s what I try to focus on every time I step on the field.Of course, that’s easier said than done. There are always outside factors—pressure, expectations, and the ever-present challenges of being in a new environment. But no matter what, soccer remains my escape. When I’m in goal, I’m in control. Finding new schools, making new friends, and adjusting to a new environment is a challenge in itself. But for an athlete, especially a goalkeeper, joining a new club team is another level of difficult. Club teams often have the same core group of girls for years. Even though new players come in, many have been together since they were kids—they know each other’s styles, they have chemistry on the field, and they have friendships off of it.Walking into that as an outsider is tough. No matter how much research you do on a club, no matter how many practices or tryouts you attend, there’s always an adjustment period. Soccer is all about personalities. On the field, there are 11 different ones working together, and as a goalkeeper, you have to be both respected and respectful. You have to command leadership while also earning trust, and that’s hard when you’re stepping into an already well-established flow. I’ve played with so many different types of players, learned various approaches to the game, and expanded both my soccer IQ and emotional intelligence. I’ve also formed connections with people who share my love for the game, and those bonds are unbreakable.A perfect example of this is my experience with the Dominican Republic national team. I don’t see my teammates every day—we don’t even talk all the time. But the moment we step on the field together, it’s like no time has passed. The chemistry is there because we built it fast, and that kind of connection is something special.Cons: &nbsp; &nbsp; • &nbsp; &nbsp;Constantly having to prove yourself again. &nbsp; &nbsp; • &nbsp; &nbsp;Leaving behind teammates and friends. &nbsp; &nbsp; • &nbsp; &nbsp;Never feeling like you had enough time to make the impact you wanted.The hardest part about this lifestyle is when you finally get comfortable—when you find your flow, your team, your people—and then you have to leave. Every time I leave a team, I can’t help but think about what I could’ve done differently, how I could’ve left a bigger impact, how I might’ve taken that time for granted. And saying goodbye to teammates is never easy. What matters is my intensity and confidence.This experience has shaped me not just as a player, but as a person. It has forced me to step outside of my comfort zone, over and over again. Walking into a new team, into a room full of strangers who already have their chemistry and unspoken understanding, is intimidating. But I’ve learned that the only way to earn my place is to put myself out there—to communicate, to lead, to show how much I want it. Every time I’ve done that, I’ve grown. I’ve gained confidence in my voice, in my presence, in my ability to adapt.It’s also taught me resilience. Not every transition has been easy. Some have been frustrating, overwhelming, and even lonely at first. But through it all, I’ve learned how to keep showing up, how to fight for respect, and how to lead even when I’m still finding my footing. Most importantly, I’ve learned that no matter where life takes me, I will always have a place in this sport. The Game That Grounds Me: Soccer as My Safe Space

My name is Eduardo “Eddy” Marin. I am a division 1 goalkeeper at Santa Clara University. &nbsp;I’m a Bay Area local, I played one year of academy at Lamorinda SC and one season at 51O USL2. When I first started playing soccer, I played 2-3 years up, which resulted in having my fair shares of being rotated in net. I was at the brink of death, but woke up a week and a half later, with injuries such as vision loss in my right eye and hearing loss in my left ear, broken wrist and an aneurism in my face. The biggest challenge mentally was having to deal with not being able to play keeper for 6 months. The biggest challenge I faced physically was not having my right eye vision or left side hearing.&nbsp;<h3>The Road to Recovery</h3>The first couple steps I took into my recovery was adapting to my new depth perception, doing a lot of hand eye stuff, ball eye stuff, pretty much getting used to having one eye. In my first couple trainings back with the team I could not catch a volley consistently, I dropped everything, made many minor errors, and it made me doubt my ability to return to the keeper I once was. The key people who kept me on track throughout all this were my family and friends, as they continue to push me to this day to keep going for them, as they still believe in me and what I can accomplish. Although I wasn’t able to fully train for 6 months, I did what I could on and off the field. I stayed disciplined and committed by trusting God’s plan as I believe that he still has a plan for me in soccer, I kept reminding myself how great it felt to be on the pitch, which inspires me to be better everyday. A second chance: from setback to comeback

I am Maleni Morales, a Mexican American goalkeeper currently playing in Liga MX Femenil with Club Pachuca. Born and raised in Northern California, I grew up playing for local clubs such as UC Premier and Santa Clara Sporting. I stayed in California for college, competing in the CCAA at the NCAA Division 2 level for Sonoma State University and Cal State University Monterey Bay, with a season at Las Positas College in between transferring. After graduating from CSUMB, I spent a season with the semi-pro team Oakland Soul in the USWL. Although I was born in the United States I had the opportunity to apply for dual citizenship through my dad who was originally born in Mexico. Applying for dual citizenship was a process my family and I began after I trialed with a team in LigaMX femenil before graduating college. This opportunity came unexpectedly and didn’t necessarily result in my immediate integration to the league but was a part of my process to eventually playing pro. When on trial I learned that there were more opportunities waiting for me if I applied for dual citizenship being that clubs are limited to carrying only 5 foreign players on a roster in a given season. Mexican futbol and rooting for teams in LigaMX was a big part of my childhood and clearly defined what having passion for the game was to me. Playing here in many ways ties into parts of my origin. &nbsp;The Mexican goalkeeper’s style of play is based on concepts similar although evolved to the ones I grew up learning from my first goalkeeper coach who had also had a Mexican background. Here I have found home in the league, my club and most especially the people that are a part of it. There I played in Seconde Ligue with TEGG. I can say that I feel like my time there was very influential to my development as a person and as a player. Playing overseas and so far away from home exposed me to a lot of changes that pushed me to adapt in a short time. Moving to France I had to work to learn a new style of play, how to communicate on the pitch in a new language, adjust to a new training environment and team, as well as an entirely new country. Although at times experiencing all this change at once felt challenging, being in this situation, under stress increased my adaptability in new environments. Moving to a new club will always come with an adjustment period but managing during this time is a skill and the more you experience the initial discomfort the more traction you can begin to build to use to your advantage when in a new situation. My name is Carlos Eduardo Herrera Lepe and I am a professional goalkeeper for Detroit City FC. I was born in Mexico City and moved to San Leandro, California at the age of 3, where I spent my life until moving away for college. I attended a junior college in Iowa before transferring to a Division Two school in Texas where I finished my athletic and academic career in 2019. I just knew that the natural progression for me was to go to college to continue my academic and athletic career and didn’t care where that took me. I spoke with JUCOs, D2s, and NAIA schools and ultimately decided on Iowa Western Community College with no idea what to expect, just the goal of achieving my dreams.Balancing soccer and school for me was challenging for me because all of this mixes in with my social life as well. Being away from home with no restrictions for the first time at 17 can be overwhelming because you’re fully responsible for all your choices. You choose if you go to class, if you are eating healthy or not, if you are doing extra gym work amongst many other things. Talent can help players stand out in college, but those who stand out the most are those who are professional enough to take care of their bodies. Nearby, I had USL teams Austin Bold and RGV Toros who took an interest in me and tracked me through my senior year. I began attending combines and trainings to keep myself on the radar, as well as to keep improving my game.Summer leagues were pivotal to the development of my game. I played for the Little Rock Rangers and Laredo Heat during my college summers. The best summer teams consist of Division 1 players along with some former professionals, so it's the perfect place to compare yourself to the competition and keep improving.During my time in college and in the NPSL, I met many people who helped me get to where I am today. I was confident in my abilities going into the preseason, but nervous because I didn't know what to expect. The difference in level between college/semi-pro to professional is night and day. Everything you can think of gets taken to a higher level. The shooting is harder, the passes are faster, the players are stronger, and the most notable change is the level of consistency in the simple actions.After being on trial for close to 4 weeks, I was let go and was back to square one of having no team. I went on trial with a NISA team for a couple of weeks afterward, but that ultimately didn't work out either. An issue that made securing my first contract more challenging was the fact that I had a Mexican passport. This meant that I was considered an internationa l player, and teams only had limited international roster spots that are usually reserved for players with impressive careers.&nbsp;A few weeks into the 2022 USL season, one of the goalkeepers from Monterey Bay unfortunately suffered a season-ending injury. Following this injury, I received a phone call to go train the following day. One of the things I've found best is that there’s someone who wants to do something extra after training. Getting as much work in while keeping your body healthy is the best way to adapt to the speed of play.The mental side is one that isn’t spoken about too often, but one I believe to be the most important. In my first year at Monterey, I suffered from impostor syndrome. Having spells of no game time is something all goalies go through at some point, but in an environment where not playing could mean not having a contract the following year make these spells that much more taxing mentally. I am grateful to have found a sports psychologist who worked with me during the rough patches and made it all seem manageable. While there is still a bit of a stigma around seeing a psychologist, I believe training the mind is just as important as training our hands or feet.&nbsp;Maintaining the body healthy through an entire professional season came with a learning curve for me. My body was only ever used to 3-5 month seasons, not 10 months where every training session is twice as intense as before. After my first season ended, I spent the offseason dropping 10-15 pounds while strengthening areas that I had issues with in the season. While the offseason work is important, I believe the most important work happens during the season. In season, one must continue to lift, although with less weight, to keep the body strong. Emmie Allen is a professional soccer player and goalkeeper who currently plays for Bay FC in the National Women's Soccer League (NWSL). From High Point, North Carolina, she had a standout college career at the University of North Carolina (UNC), where she played as the starting goalkeeper. I reached out to teams, asking if I could train with them during the summer, though it didn’t come to fruition. Still, that initiative showed my determination and eagerness to be part of a professional environment. To further highlight my progress, I made a habit of compiling highlights from each game I played. At the end of the season, I would create a comprehensive highlight reel showcasing my growth and performance over the entire year. I entered preseason with a "nothing to lose" mentality, and it pushed me to have some of the best performances and practices of my life. Stepping into the professional environment, I quickly learned the importance of being fully locked in—both mentally and physically—throughout every practice. It became clear that I had to believe in myself and trust that I was good enough to be there because, at the end of the day, no one else is going to have that belief for you. When I was told at the end of the two-month preseason tryout that I was being offered a contract, it was one of the most incredible feelings I’ve ever had. All the sacrifices, hard work, and determination had paid off, and my dream had finally come true. That moment will always be unforgettable, and I don’t think anything will ever top the sheer joy of realizing that my dream was now my reality."<h3>&nbsp;Challenges &amp; Overcoming Them </h3>"Mental toughness is essential to being a professional soccer player, and even more so for a goalkeeper. It can be tough when only one goalkeeper gets to play at a time, and there are times when you feel left out or like you’re not wanted. But it’s in those moments that you have to believe in yourself and remind yourself that you’re good enough, even if you’re not the starter. I work with a sports psychologist every week to help me overcome mistakes and mental roadblocks that arise during practice or games. When I’m not the one playing in games, I treat practice as if it’s a real match, putting pressure on myself to perform at the highest level. As a professional, I’ve learned that perfection isn’t the goal, but striving for it is. Even the best soccer players in the world make mistakes every day. What truly matters is how you respond to those mistakes. It’s how you bounce back that ultimately determines whether you’ll grow and improve from them or let them hold you back.
